For JPEG, quality controls lossy compression. For PNG, settings below 100% reduce the color palette; 100% keeps full color detail. Lower settings usually create smaller files but can make visual changes more noticeable.
Every image starts at 80% quality by default. This setting is designed to reduce file size while keeping visual differences unnoticeable during typical viewing. Lower values apply stronger image compression and can reduce quality, especially in detailed photos, gradients, and graphics, so use the Before and After comparison when choosing a lower setting.
File size depends on image content, source encoding, format, and quality. A source that is already highly optimized can produce a result that is the same size or larger at a high quality setting.
